EDIT (5/8/12): Uploaded some better quality images (the ones I took for my IB exam). You still need to download them to see all the backwards writing.

Series of three large-scale pieces (size 22x30 inches) for my IB Studio Art class (looking at the relationship between structure and function). Materials are: coffee, tea, beet pigment, cranberry pigment, natural hair dye, charcoal, graphite, pastel, gold leaf and black india ink (applied using a cut feather quill). Paper is hot pressed watercolor.

Above: Quick snapshot of my work in progress, done on the floor using a piece of cardboard as a hard surface.

Structure & Function
For those who read this I ask that you take the time to really appreciate these three drawing that Awaicu has created. These drawings are a great in detail, they are accurate to each other, and the artist demonstrates a good use and control with her media. The
The Three piece work know as Structures and Functions features an original designed character created who was developed by Awaicu herself which is one feature that makes this series very unique, but to me the character wasn’t the attention getter. What caught my eye was the natural and believable appearance of the skeletal and muscle structure. These textbook like structure drawings of her character, to me, makes it more real. The structure drawings seem to take the fantasy out of the equation and replace it with a more real image, as if the creature had been found documented and studied.
Skeletal Structure: The skeletal structure really seemed to get my head out of the clouds once I first saw the image. The image didn’t give me a gloomy or sad like feeling that often follows skeletons and death. Rather it appeared to be interesting (museum interesting), and still alive. The skeleton’s accuracy to the animal from which it was based (wolf I assume) made it appear to be even more believable.
The Muscle Structure: The muscle structure drawing shows the understanding that the artist has on the subject and her knowledge of the muscular build of her creature. This complex understanding isn’t limited to the wolf form but it is really a diverse understanding. She shows a solid understanding of the muscle structure of the canine’s face, bird wings, bat wings, and a dragon style tail. All of the muscle structure is difficult to understand but it’s all the more difficult to make up a structure and do it successfully. I believe that Awaicu successfully made a muscle structure tail, and made it believable. The texture that she gave the muscles is really an important detail, that without it, the drawing would be confusing and the creature would have no shape. The color that she chose is also seemed to do the drawing good, It really helped the drawing appear natural and it doesn’t force the viewer to think that they are looking at a muscle structure drawing.
The Creature: The creature, the final drawing of the set of three really confused me once I looked at the set of drawings in order. It might be the main of the creature that confuses me, but that is really opinion based. My favorite feature of the final creatures drawing is the silver that you used to cover the bat like wing and the tail, it’s cool because it’s different. The reflective silver isn’t overwhelming, but it does distract the eyes from the rest of the figure. The bird wings are really nicely done, she did a great job of keeping white on the wings and making the features look natural on the wings.
Over all this series of three is very nicely done the character is neat, there was a lot of time spent on each of the drawings. I think that this is a successful set of drawings because of the time that has went into making them and because their just so awesome.
